Product Information

Everything you need to choose with confidence.

Is Clear Acrylic Rod right for my application?

Clear Acrylic Rod is particularly useful where transparency, appearance and rigidity are important.

It can be cut, drilled, machined and polished using suitable Acrylic fabrication techniques, making it useful for both decorative and functional components.

Acrylic is relatively rigid and can provide an excellent visual finish, but it should not automatically be selected for applications requiring very high impact resistance.

Key properties and benefits
  • Clear PMMA Acrylic with excellent visual clarity.
  • Good rigidity for display and fabricated components.

Can Clear Acrylic Rod be machined?

Yes. Clear Acrylic Rod can be machined using suitable tooling and machining techniques.

Acrylic can be turned, drilled and otherwise machined to produce a variety of components. Sharp tooling and suitable cutting conditions are important because excessive heat can affect the material and finished surface.

Care should also be taken to avoid excessive mechanical stress, particularly around drilled holes, sharp internal corners and other stress-concentration points.

Please note: Warlond Plastics supplies Acrylic Rod in 1000mm lengths. We do not offer custom rod machining or fabrication.
Drilling Clear Acrylic Rod

Acrylic Rod can be drilled, but correct technique is important to reduce the risk of chipping, cracking or excessive heat.

Use sharp, suitable tooling and avoid excessive pressure. The component should be supported securely during machining.

Particular care should be taken as the drill exits the material, where breakout or chipping can occur.

Can Clear Acrylic Rod be polished?

Yes. Acrylic can be polished to improve the appearance of appropriately prepared machined or cut surfaces.

The quality of the final result depends heavily on the initial machining and surface preparation. Deep tooling marks generally need to be removed progressively before final polishing.

Care should be taken to avoid excessive heat during polishing, as overheating may damage or distort the Acrylic.

Can Clear Acrylic Rod be heated or formed?

Acrylic is a thermoplastic and can be softened with controlled heat for suitable forming applications.

With solid rod, heating needs to be controlled carefully because the material thickness can make uniform heating more difficult than with thin Acrylic sheet.

The required process depends on the rod diameter, desired shape and finished application. Testing the proposed forming process is recommended before production work.

Chemical resistance of Acrylic Rod

Acrylic provides useful resistance to a range of substances, including many dilute acids and alkalis, but it is not resistant to every chemical or solvent.

Some organic solvents and cleaning chemicals can attack Acrylic, causing surface damage, crazing, cracking or loss of clarity.

Chemical compatibility should therefore be checked for the specific chemical, concentration, temperature, exposure time and stress conditions involved.

How should Clear Acrylic Rod be cleaned?

For normal cleaning, use warm soapy water and a clean soft cloth.

Avoid abrasive pads, harsh cleaners and unsuitable solvents that may scratch, craze or damage the Acrylic surface.

If a specialised cleaner is required, check its compatibility with PMMA Acrylic before use.

Can Clear Acrylic Rod be bonded?

Yes. Clear Acrylic Rod can be bonded to compatible Acrylic components using suitable Acrylic cement systems.

Warlond Plastics stocks SCIGRIP WELD-ON 3 and WELD-ON 16 for Acrylic fabrication applications.

Joint preparation, fit, surface condition and adhesive application can all influence the finished bond.

For clear or highly visible components, consider testing the bonding method on an offcut first because the finished joint may remain visible.

Always follow the adhesive manufacturer's instructions and confirm suitability for the intended application.

Why choose Clear Acrylic Rod?

Clear Acrylic Rod is particularly well suited to applications where clarity, appearance, rigidity and a high-quality surface finish are more important than extreme impact resistance.

Compared with Polycarbonate, Acrylic generally offers a harder surface and excellent visual appearance, making it a strong choice for displays, decorative components, lighting features, models and visible fabricated parts.

Polycarbonate is typically considered where very high impact resistance and toughness are the primary requirements. Warlond Plastics does not currently stock Polycarbonate Rod.

Clear Acrylic Rod is a good choice when you need:
  • Excellent transparency and visual appearance
  • A smooth, high-quality surface finish
  • Good rigidity
  • A material that can be cut, drilled, machined and polished
  • Clear rod for displays, decorative fabrication or visible components
