Marine & Outdoor Plastics Guide

Marine & Outdoor Plastics Guide

Choosing the Right Plastic for Boat Windows, Marine Fit-Outs & Outdoor Projects

Acrylic, Polycarbonate and HDPE can all perform well in marine and outdoor applications, but they solve different problems. This guide explains the differences so you can choose the right material for boat windows, marine cabinetry, protective panels and outdoor components.

Quick Answer

Choose Clear Acrylic where maximum visibility and good surface hardness are important. Choose Grey Tint Acrylic for tinted boat windows where scratch resistance and appearance are priorities. Choose UV2 Polycarbonate where very high impact resistance is the priority. Choose White UV Boatboard HDPE for marine cabinetry, hatches and outdoor fit-outs, and Black UV-Stabilised HDPE for tough outdoor engineering components.

Start Here

What are you making?

Start with the finished application rather than the material name.

Boat Windows & Windscreens

Start with Clear or Grey Tint Acrylic where visibility, appearance and scratch resistance are important.

Consider UV2 Polycarbonate instead where very high impact resistance is the main requirement.

Boat Cabinetry & Fit-Outs

White UV Boatboard HDPE is designed for demanding marine and outdoor environments and is well suited to cabinetry, doors, hatches, storage and other fit-out components.

Clear or Tinted High-Impact Panels

UV2 Polycarbonate is a strong starting point where transparency and exceptional impact resistance are more important than surface scratch resistance. Clear and Grey Tint options are available.

Outdoor Engineering Components

Black UV-Stabilised HDPE is suited to outdoor, marine and wet-environment components where toughness, moisture resistance and machinability are important.

Boat Windows

Clear Acrylic, Grey Tint Acrylic or Polycarbonate?

These materials can look similar, but their strengths are different. The best choice depends on visibility, tint, surface durability and impact requirements.

Clear Acrylic Excellent clarity and high visible-light transmission. A strong choice where maximum visibility is important, particularly in dusk, night-time or lower-light conditions.
Grey Tint Acrylic A popular choice for tinted boat windows. Acrylic provides good surface hardness and generally better scratch resistance than standard polycarbonate. Available from Warlond Plastics in 3mm, 4.5mm and 6mm thicknesses.
UV2 Polycarbonate Choose where very high impact resistance is more important. Clear and Grey Tint options are available. Grey Tint UV2 Polycarbonate is available in 3mm, 4.5mm and 6mm thicknesses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Marine & Outdoor Plastic FAQs

What is the best plastic for boat windows?

Acrylic is a popular choice for boat windows because it provides excellent clarity and good surface hardness. Clear Acrylic is particularly useful where maximum light transmission and visibility are important.

Grey Tint Acrylic is a popular option where a tinted appearance is preferred. If very high impact resistance is the main priority, UV2 Polycarbonate may be more suitable.

Why use Clear Acrylic for boat windows?

Clear Acrylic provides excellent optical clarity and high visible-light transmission. Compared with a tinted material, more available light passes through the panel, which can be useful where visibility during dusk, night-time or other low-light conditions matters.

What thicknesses of Grey Tint Acrylic are available?

Warlond Plastics can supply Grey Tint Acrylic in 3mm, 4.5mm and 6mm thicknesses.

Smaller 3mm Grey Tint Acrylic panels are currently listed for purchase through our website. We also commonly supply customers with thicker 4.5mm and 6mm Grey Tint Acrylic sheets and panels.

If you require 4.5mm or 6mm material, a larger panel or a full-size Grey Tint Acrylic sheet, please contact us with the size, thickness and quantity required for availability and a quote.

Why is Grey Tint Acrylic popular for boat windows?

Grey Tint Acrylic gives boat windows a darker tinted appearance while retaining the surface hardness benefits of acrylic.

Acrylic generally offers better scratch resistance than standard polycarbonate, which can be useful for marine windows that require regular cleaning and are exposed to day-to-day contact.

Grey Tint Acrylic is available from Warlond Plastics in 3mm, 4.5mm and 6mm thicknesses.

What thicknesses of Grey Tint Polycarbonate are available?

Warlond Plastics can supply Grey Tint UV2 Polycarbonate in 3mm, 4.5mm and 6mm thicknesses.

It is a useful option for tinted marine and outdoor applications where greater impact resistance is required. If you need a particular panel size, larger sheet or custom cut-to-size panel, contact us with your dimensions, thickness and quantity for a quote.

Is Acrylic or Polycarbonate better for a boat window?

Neither material is automatically better for every application. Acrylic is generally preferred where optical appearance and surface scratch resistance are priorities.

Polycarbonate is generally preferred where very high impact resistance and toughness are the main requirements.

Both Grey Tint Acrylic and Grey Tint UV2 Polycarbonate are available from Warlond Plastics in 3mm, 4.5mm and 6mm thicknesses, allowing the material to be selected around the requirements of the project.

What is White UV Boatboard used for?

White UV Boatboard HDPE is designed for marine and outdoor fabrication. Typical applications include boat cabinetry, doors, hatches, storage compartments, seating components, instrument panels, tables, trim and outdoor cabinetry.

It is an opaque HDPE sheet and is not intended for boat windows.

Can I buy full-size White UV Boatboard sheets?

Full-size White UV Boatboard sheets are not currently available to purchase directly through our website.

If you require a full-size sheet, please contact Warlond Plastics to check current availability and request a quote.

Can HDPE be used outdoors?

Outdoor suitability depends on the grade. Black HDPE supplied by Warlond Plastics is UV stabilised, while White UV Boatboard is specifically suited to marine and outdoor applications.

Do not assume that every white or natural HDPE sheet has the same UV performance.

Can I bring in my old boat window, frame or cardboard template?

Warlond Plastics does not provide a measuring, templating or fitting service and we do not manufacture parts by measuring cardboard templates, existing frames or physical samples.

For simple rectangular panels, please provide the required finished length and width. For CNC machined shapes, holes or cut-outs, please provide a dimensioned drawing showing the finished part you require.

This ensures the component is manufactured according to the dimensions and specifications supplied by you and helps avoid errors caused by interpreting or measuring physical templates.

What information do I need to provide for CNC machining?

For CNC machined parts, customers must provide a drawing showing all required dimensions along with the material, thickness and quantity required.

The drawing should clearly identify relevant profiles, holes, cut-outs, pockets, countersinks and other machining details. We accept most common drawing file formats.

Warlond Plastics will machine the component according to the dimensions and specifications supplied by the customer.

Can Warlond Plastics custom cut marine plastic sheets?

Yes. Warlond Plastics can provide custom cut-to-size sheet and CNC machining for suitable Acrylic, Polycarbonate and HDPE projects.

For rectangular panels, send us the material, thickness, finished length, width and quantity required. For CNC machined components, please also provide a dimensioned drawing containing the required machining details.
