Natural Extruded Nylon 6 Rod is a strong, tough and wear-resistant engineering plastic commonly machined into bushes, rollers, guides, pulleys, spacers and other mechanical components. Nylon 6 combines good mechanical strength, wear performance, impact resistance and useful sliding properties for a wide range of industrial applications.

Is Natural Nylon 6 Rod right for my application?

Natural Extruded Nylon 6 is a good choice where a machined component needs a combination of strength, toughness, wear resistance and impact resistance.

It is commonly considered for bushes, rollers, guides, pulleys, sleeves, spacers and other moving or load-bearing components.

Nylon does absorb moisture, so where a component operates in wet conditions and requires very close dimensional tolerances, another material such as Acetal may be more suitable.

Compliance of the base resin does not automatically mean every finished machined component is approved for every food-contact application. Suitability depends on the intended use, operating conditions, finished-part preparation and the regulatory requirements that apply to the final article.

Does Nylon 6 absorb moisture?

Yes. Nylon 6 is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from its surrounding environment.

Moisture absorption can cause dimensional change and can influence some mechanical properties of the material.

For many general engineering applications this is manageable, but it becomes particularly important where a component operates in a wet or humid environment and requires very close dimensional tolerances.

For close-tolerance components exposed to moisture, Acetal may be the better choice because of its much lower moisture absorption and stronger dimensional stability.

Machining Extruded Nylon 6 Rod

Extruded Nylon 6 can be turned, milled, drilled and bored using conventional machining equipment.

Sharp tooling, suitable feed rates and good chip clearance help control heat build-up and improve the finished surface.

Nylon is tougher and less rigid than Acetal, so the material can deflect if excessive cutting or clamping pressure is applied.

Where close finished tolerances are required, allow for material movement caused by machining stress, temperature and moisture absorption.

All Natural Extruded Nylon 6 Rod is supplied in 1000mm lengths only.

Natural Nylon vs Black Nylon — which should I choose?

Natural and Black Extruded Nylon 6 share many of the same general mechanical characteristics, but the best choice depends on the application.

Choose Natural Nylon where the natural appearance is preferred or where your application requires the supporting documentation associated with the Natural Nylon material.

Choose Black Nylon where a black appearance is preferred for general industrial and mechanical components and food-contact documentation is not required.

Each engineering plastic has different strengths, so the best choice depends on what the finished component needs to do.

Oils, fuels and chemical resistance

Nylon 6 offers useful resistance to many oils, greases and fuels, which contributes to its popularity for mechanical components.

Chemical suitability should still be confirmed for the specific substance, concentration, temperature and exposure time involved.
