Grey PVC Rod · PVC-U

Rigid, corrosion-resistant engineering plastic for chemical and general machining applications.

Grey PVC Rod is a rigid unplasticised PVC engineering plastic with good chemical resistance, low moisture absorption, useful electrical insulation properties and good dimensional stability for general machining. It is commonly machined into spacers, bushes, valve components, electrical insulating parts, guides, fittings and other industrial components.

Product Information

Everything you need to choose with confidence.

Is Grey PVC Rod right for my application?

Grey PVC Rod is a good choice where you need a rigid, corrosion-resistant plastic with good chemical resistance, low moisture absorption and useful electrical insulation properties.

It is particularly useful for machined components used in chemical-handling, electrical, plumbing and general industrial environments.

PVC is not intended for the same high-temperature applications as materials such as PEEK or PTFE, and another engineering plastic may be preferable where high heat or heavy mechanical loading is the main requirement.

Key properties and benefits
  • Good chemical resistance — useful in many chemical-handling and industrial environments.
  • Rigid material — suitable for machined components requiring good shape retention.
  • Low moisture absorption — useful in wet and moisture-exposed applications.
  • Corrosion resistant — PVC will not rust.
  • Electrical insulation — useful for suitable electrical insulating components.
  • Machinable using conventional equipment and suitable tooling.
  • Economical engineering plastic for many general-purpose applications.
Common applications

Grey PVC Rod is commonly machined into:

  • Spacers
  • Bushes
  • Valve components
  • Chemical-resistant fittings
  • Electrical insulating components
  • Guides
  • Jigs and fixtures
  • Washers and support components
  • General industrial machined parts
Chemical resistance

PVC-U has good resistance to many acids, alkalis, salts and other commonly encountered chemicals, which is one reason it is widely used in chemical-handling and industrial applications.

Chemical compatibility still depends on the exact chemical, concentration, temperature and service conditions.

Where chemical exposure is critical, suitability should be confirmed for the specific operating environment before selecting the material.

Electrical insulation properties

Rigid PVC has useful electrical insulation properties and can be used for suitable insulating components, spacers, supports and other machined electrical parts.

Where electrical performance is critical, the requirements of the specific application and material grade should be confirmed.

Machining Grey PVC Rod

Grey PVC Rod can be turned, milled, drilled, bored and threaded using conventional machining equipment and suitable sharp tooling.

Sharp tools and controlled cutting conditions help reduce heat build-up and improve surface finish.

Excessive machining heat should be avoided because PVC can soften and dimensional accuracy may be affected.

All Warlond Plastics Grey PVC Rod is supplied in 1000mm lengths. Select your required diameter using the product options above. Custom rod cutting or fabrication is not offered.

Temperature limitations

PVC-U is best suited to moderate-temperature applications rather than high-temperature service.

If the component will operate at elevated temperatures, material strength, dimensional movement and the specific service conditions should be considered carefully.

For substantially higher operating temperatures, an engineering plastic such as PEEK or PTFE may be more appropriate depending on the mechanical and chemical requirements.

Available diameters and rod length

Grey PVC Rod is available in selectable diameters up to 50mm.

All rod is supplied in 1000mm lengths only.

Select the required diameter using the product options above to view current pricing and availability.

Engineering plastic rod is supplied as machining stock. Where a precise finished diameter is required, allow sufficient material for machining to the final dimension.

Can PVC Rod be glued or bonded?

PVC is generally easier to bond than low-surface-energy plastics such as HDPE or PTFE.

Suitable PVC solvent cements or specialised adhesive systems may be used depending on the component and application.

Bonding suitability depends on the joint design, surface preparation, adhesive system and service conditions, so critical joints should be tested before use.
