Beige Polypropylene Rod is a PP-H polypropylene homopolymer engineering plastic with excellent resistance to many chemicals, very low moisture absorption and low material weight. It is commonly machined into spacers, bushes, guides, rollers, valve components, fittings, jigs and general industrial components.

Is Beige Polypropylene Rod right for my application?

Polypropylene Rod is a strong choice where you need a lightweight, moisture-resistant and chemically resistant engineering plastic.

It is particularly useful for chemical-handling components, wet-environment parts, spacers, bushes, guides, rollers, fittings and general machined components.

Polypropylene is less rigid than engineering plastics such as Acetal and has relatively high thermal expansion. Where high stiffness or very close dimensional tolerances are the main requirement, another material may be a better choice.

Chemical resistance

Polypropylene is well known for strong resistance to many acids, alkalis and other chemicals, which makes it useful in chemical, process and wet-environment applications.

Chemical compatibility depends on the exact chemical, concentration, temperature, exposure time and mechanical loading.

Where chemical exposure is critical, suitability should be confirmed for the specific operating environment before selecting the material.

Moisture and wet-environment performance

Polypropylene absorbs very little moisture, so it is useful in wet, wash-down and liquid-handling environments.

Unlike moisture-sensitive plastics, its low water absorption helps minimise dimensional changes caused specifically by water uptake.

Temperature changes can still cause dimensional movement because polypropylene has relatively high thermal expansion.

Machining Polypropylene Rod

Polypropylene can be turned, milled, drilled and bored using conventional machining equipment and suitable sharp tooling.

Sharp tools, positive cutting geometry and good chip clearance help minimise heat build-up and improve surface finish.

Because polypropylene is relatively flexible and expands more with temperature than materials such as Acetal, careful machining is important where dimensional accuracy is required.

Temperature considerations

Polypropylene is suitable for many normal industrial operating temperatures but should not be treated as a high-temperature engineering plastic.

Its stiffness and dimensional behaviour can change as temperature increases, and polypropylene also has relatively high thermal expansion.

Where elevated temperature is a major requirement, the load, service duration and operating environment should be considered before selecting the material.

Is this Polypropylene Rod food-contact approved?

Polypropylene as a material family is widely available in grades intended for food-contact applications. However, food-contact compliance depends on the specific resin and supplied grade.

We do not recommend assuming food-contact compliance from the material name alone.

Engineering plastic rod is supplied as machining stock. Where a precise finished diameter is required, allow sufficient material for machining to the final dimension.

Can Polypropylene Rod be glued or bonded?

Polypropylene has a low-energy surface and is generally difficult to bond using ordinary adhesives.

Mechanical fastening or plastic welding may be more suitable for many applications.

Specialised surface treatments, primers and adhesive systems can sometimes be used, but the bonding process should be tested before relying on an adhesive joint.
